August Meeting

About 25 members joined our meeting at the Shalom Retreat Center. Dick Vorwald gave a short program on the building’s history. The Sisters of St. Francis left Germany in the 1870’s and immigrated to the US. About 30 of them moved to Dubuque with S. Xavier. Originally they lived at the convent at St. Mary’s parish (now the Maria House). They built the Shalom Center as their first convent. Later, it was a high school. The sisters have been very active in the community since moving here: developing a hospital, orphanage, and nursing home over the years.

The building itself was designed by Fridolin Heer – who also designed the Dubuque Brewing & Malting and Dubuque County Courthouse. Fridolin Heer
