DOHE-9/17/2007 Meeting Minutes

The Old House Enthusiasts meeting of September 13, 2007 was held at John & Ellie Freund's building, 1001 Main Street in Dubuque, IA. A big thanks to our hosts!

The DOHE meeting of October 11, 2007 will be held at 7pm at the John Martin residence, 732 Fenelon Street.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Galena House Tour will take place September 22-23 from 10am-5pm.

Iowa Governor Chet Culver will join Dubuquers Dr. & Mrs. Darryl Mozena at their residence, 900 West Third Street, for a reception celebrating Terrace Hill in Des Moines on October 25 @ 7pm. OHE affiliates welcome. Parking available in the Mercy Hospital lot. RSVP: 515-280-3450 by Sept. 19.

Dubuquers can join legislators at the Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino on Friday, September 21st at 7:30 am to show their support for passenger rail service from Chicago to Dubuque. OHE will send support letter.

October Treat Providers: Dale Knipschield, Marie Fitzgerald, and the Robinsons. Thanks so much to last month's treat providers-- excellent job!

MEETING MINUTES

The meeting commenced at 7:00 pm with a tour of the building, which will include first floor retail space, second floor office space, and a third floor apartment. Built in 1884 (the same year the first Trans-Atlantic Telegraph cable was laid on the ocean floor to connect New York with London; it failed after only a couple of days in service) the building was a focus area in Dubuque's downtown for years; it housed many businesses / organizations including a business school and a music school.

Ellie Freund and Diane Schulz gave an informal explanation of the Questers Group, an organization for women that offers grants for restoration projects, student scholarships, and programs about such topics as antiques, restoration, and preservation. They also award members for historic research and participate in international conventions.

OLD/NEW BUSINESS

Please send program ideas/ requests to Tom Welu. He is also looking for members who wish to share collections at a meeting.

Tour expenses paid off. Exact balance given at meeting.

BY-LAWS COMMITTEE

Dale left messages with attorney. If no response, will move on to new attorney. Keisha Wainwright will assist with process.

GRANT COMMITTEE

Cinda Welu will continue to serve as chairperson. Please contact Cinda to join this committee.

PRESERVATION COMMITTEE

Nativity Rezoning issue tabled. New application set for October 3 at 6:30 pm at the public library. Chairperson and committee members needed. Contact a board member to fill these positions.

WEB COMMITTEE

Tracking installed. Marjorie Tayloe will help write articles. Tom Welu has an article to submit.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Chairperson and committee members needed. Contact a board member to fill a position or confirm your existing position.

TOUR COMMITTEE

One house confirmed, two others tentative. Tour will take place in the West 11th District. Committee composed of chairperson Bethany Golombeski and committee members Gwen Kosel, Angie Stoffel, and Keisha Wainwright.

TOUR FUND-RAISING COMMITTEE

Chairperson Linda Derks, committee member Janelle Westerfield. Additional committee members wanted: contact Linda Derks to join.
