DOHE-2/14/2008 Meeting Minutes

Before we get into the minutes of the Febuary 14th, 2008 meeting , one must wonder how did people contend, no, survive would be a better word, with the winters since our city’s beginning 175 years ago. Cutting wood, pumping water, no electricity, no phone, no carry-out pizza, no television, no snowblowers, no plow trucks with salt, running to the outhouse,-- you get the picture.

Maybe it hasn’t been the worst winter after all.

Now the Feb. 14th meeting: It was held at Jeanelle Westerfield’s home and Mural Inspirations Gallery 1344 Locust St. What a fine example of adaptive reuse of a building! The home was built in the 1870’s. Originally, it was a blacksmith’s home with a carriage house out back. Jeanelle bought the home in 1988. It was part of the 2004 Old House Enthusiast’s Tour. (See full description at dbqohe.org.)

In 2007 Jeanelle opened the art gallery with daughter Sarah Barnes. Jeanelle & Sarah shared the many examples of their creative artistry: paintings, painted murals & other beautiful things. Visit their website. Art work can be seen at muralinspirations.com.

Now let’s talk food. What a spread of great food! Treat people were Jeanelle Westerfield, Jean/Derald Schrobilgen, Jo/Jim Edwards, Rich Vorwald, Cinda/Tom Welu, and our Valentine Anniversary couple Frank and Cindy Kraus. ( My apology to those who may have brought treats that I forgot to mention).

Thank you for the generous donations of fine food. Lots of good discussions get going when the food comes out!
