October Meeting

This month we met at Four Mounds to explore the Gentleman’s Farm area of the property. Although most of our members are familiar with the Gray House, this was the first time many of us explored the Gentleman’s Farm area. Jay gave us a guided tour before the meeting started in an attempt to get through it before dark…we were nearly successful, although the chickens had already roosted for the night.

If you missed the meeting, go and explore the area on your own. There are several signs there telling the history of the farm.

Business meeting

President Diane Schulz called the meeting to order at 7:15pm.

Treasurer’s Report

President Diane Schulz reported a balance of $7796 with no changes in membership since the September meeting.

Grants

House Tour co-chair Kay Kluseman reviewed the grant work schedule for the 2010 year. A revised application form will be complete in November for approval at the December meeting. A press release calling for applications will go out in January.
Dick Vorwald suggested a future grant possibility – having high school students doing preservation work at Eagle Point Park as apprentices.

House Tour

Co-chair Kay Kluseman reported that the committee is still looking at appropriate properties in the Clarke area. They are reviewing the letter sent to homeowners and will send the letters out before Christmas.

Preservation

Dick Vorwald noted that the Dubuque Brewing & Malting building is on the front page of the current Julien’s Journal. The painting it’s based on is also on display at the Dubuque Museum of Art. When asked for the latest on St. Mary’s, he noted that the fate of the building currently rests with the arch-bishop.

Old Business

Tom & Cinda Welu said that the Galena House Tour was great. They worked at one of the homes that had once been a brewery. The current owner has plans to start brewing beer in Galena again.

New Business

President Diane Schulz announced that the bench our club donated to Eagle Point should be in place by the time you read this. It’s near the bridge area.
At the November meeting, please come prepared to sign up (and pay for) the Christmas party.

Meeting adjourned at some point. (I really need to get a watch.)
