September Meeting

September’s meeting was held at the Old Jail. It included a tour of the Old Jail. We enjoyed a film of the building’s history and some of its most “colorful” inhabitants. The Jail house also includes an incredible collection of Dubuque artifacts, photos and other rare memorabilia owned by Bob Reding. Bob toured the group through his collection. He explained this was about one-tenth of his collection. Bob offered an invitation to the OHE to view his entire collection at another future date.

Business meeting

President Diane Schulz called the meeting to order at 7:05pm.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Dale Knipscheild reported a check sent to Four Mounds. We have $7939.66 and 45 paid members. Dale suggested we may wish to fund another small grant this year.

Grants

Meg Wall-Wild reported the committee has met and worked to form a more formal application process. This would include: timeline, application posting 2 months ahead, criteria for recording applications and a formalized plan for a website posting. Cinda Welu commented how helpful it is to have Meg’s expertise on this committee and how much is being accomplished as a result.

House Tour

Committee met and has compiled a list of several possible homes in the Clarke area. We are looking for ideas from our membership and will be pursuing home owners as soon as our list is completed.

Membership

President Diane Schulz reiterated a request for each member to email 2 friends and invite them to our next meeting.

Preservation

Dick passed out pamphlets and cards about St. Mary’s church – an endangered historic church. Suggestions were made to possibly go through process to list St. Mary’s on the National Register (Cinda). Grant applications for the church (Meg).

Website

Continue to submit “Endangered Dubuque” suggestions to John.

Old Business

Reminder of Historic Galena Homes Tour, Saturday and Sunday Sept 26-27.

New Business

Discussion about Christmas meeting/party. Dale suggested the Julien Hotel for dinner and possibly a tour of the hotel. Diane suggested the Black Horse Inn in Sherrill. It can accommodate 45 people. Cinda had been there for an event and enjoyed the experience. Diane S. explained we could have a salad, meat and dessert for $15 or a German dinner for $20. The group voted to pursue the Black Horse Inn idea. Diane S. will call the Inn to check availability for Dec 10. She and Marie N will select the food menu.

Meeting adjourned at 7:25.
